They’re sour, then they’re sweet. And no I’m not talking about Sour Patch Kids. I’m talking about Mott 32.
Has this fine dining restaurant lost it’s flippin’ mind or are they the smartest people in the room? Trick question: They’re the smartest people in the room.
I recently dined at Mott 32 in Las Vegas (they’re located in Vancouver and Hong Kong), a restaurant that prices two of their dessert at $78, and I DID NOT EXPECT THIS.
Okay. Now that I’ve stopped yelling, let’s get back to our scheduled programming here.
I’ve never met a menu that made my eyes bulge out of my head like that. And, trust me. I’ve dined at some of the most expensive restaurants, have paid substantial amounts of money for some of the most sophisticated dishes at some of the most celebrated restaurants by some of the most esteemed chefs in the world, and never have I winced.
“What? No. They’re crazy,” I told my friend who accompanied me to dinner at Mott 32. “They’re not selling me $9 dumplings…. At Mott 32? The place that had Ross Butler from 13 Reasons Why attend their grand opening.”
“I guess so,” my friend said said laughing at my reaction. “I absolutely REFUSE to believe that. I need to talk to their GM.”
I tell you, I was vividly upset. Outraged even. I think I lost it for a second because I belted out a chuckle for a moment there. It was a very “Joaquin Phoenix in Joker” moment. Very scary.
Turns out my outrage was more of disbelief and shock reaction and once that wore off, I was eager for my wild mushrooms with water chestnut dumplings to arrive. I couldn’t wait to tell everyone about “Dim Sum and Drink Sum”. So, let’s breakdown Mott 32’s menu, the one that almost gave me hemorrhage of happiness; let’s dive into what I ordered; and what I can’t wait to go back for.
The Dim Sum and Drink Sum Menu
The menu is available 5pm to 7pm and starts back up at 9pm to 11pm daily at the restaurants bar and lounge. Rewind: yes, I said daily. It includes marinated cucumbers and garlic ($5), wild mushrooms with water chestnut dumplings ($9), shredded peking duck with mushroom spring roll ($9), crispy squid with baby corn in salt and pepper ($8), hot & Sour Iberico pork shanghainese soup dumplings ($9), traditional iberico pork shanghainese soup dumplings ($8), crispy sugar coated BBQ iberico pork buns ($8), sesame prawn toast in autumn sauce ($9), and crispy szechuan chicken ($9). It’s Five o’ Clock in Hong Kong, Letters from Lee, and Mott St. Mint Julep (all $9) and red, white, and sparkling wines ($8).
Eat Like Me And Order
We had the wild mushroom and traditional pork dumplings, which were both so soft and perfect in texture. The sauce was the perfect balance to the savoriness. Off the menu (which I must suggest you travel to), I had the assorted wild mushroom in lettuce cups with black truffle sauce, wok fried flat rice noodles with bean sprouts, and scallops with truffle shavings, mushrooms, tomatoes, and asparagus.
Drink Like Me And Order
You may remember the story Chantal Ashford, our junior F&B writer, did on the “Forbidden Cocktail”? Well, I finally I got to try it (off-menu) and not only was it captivating in presentation but the elixir itself was quite literally love in a glass. Everyone was attractive suddenly. I kid. But, it is one of those cocktails with a rich background that instantly becomes a conversation starter. On the “Dim Sum and Drink Sum” menu, we tried “It’s Five O’ Clock in Hong Kong” which has Ketel One Vodka, rose liqueur, lemon orange sherbet, strawberry jam, and orange bitters, and “Mott St. Mint Julep” which has wild turkey long branch bourbon, peppered yuzu mint syrup, and soda.
What I Wish I Tried (But Didn’t Get A Chance To Because I Was Full)
I definitely will be visiting Mott 32 again because their crispy sugar coated BBQ Iberico pork buns have been on mind since then. I hope you’re inspired to drop-in for a bite off the “Dim Sum and Drink Sum” menu. It’s a great time, it’s excellent cuisine, and the prices are very generous. Take Mott 32 up on their offer and come to their home and dine with them with your friends, business partners, significant other, out-of-town relatives, or simply yourself.
